FAQ · Hong Kong

Questions families
ask us.

Short answers to the questions Hong Kong families ask most often — about online lessons, school subjects, the next school, university applications and guardianship. If your question is not here, ask it in the consultation.

01Lessons online6

How do online lessons work?

Every lesson is one to one, by video call, with a shared screen for written work. There is no ELT classroom in Hong Kong. (to be confirmed)

What ages do you teach?

From primary school to university applications. (to be confirmed)

Do you teach general English conversation for children?

Our lessons focus on school subjects taught in English, entry to the next school and university applications, rather than general conversation classes.

Can parents sit in on lessons?

Yes, whenever it helps — you are welcome to join. We do not ask parents to sit in on every lesson, as some children concentrate better without a parent in the room.

Are lessons recorded?

Only with a parent's consent. Every tutor's identity is checked, and tutors in the UK have a DBS check.

Do you teach the local DSE curriculum?

No. We teach international and UK-style curricula — IB, IGCSE, A-Level and the UK Key Stages. For children moving from a local school to an international school, see international school entry.

02Time zones and tutors3

What is the time difference with your tutors?

Tutors in Japan are one hour ahead of Hong Kong. Tutors in the UK are seven hours behind during British Summer Time and eight hours behind in winter, so they can teach in Hong Kong evenings and at weekends.

Can we choose or change the tutor?

Yes. Your coordinator suggests a tutor for the subject and curriculum. If the match does not work, tell your coordinator and we arrange a change, with a handover of the learning record.

Do your tutors speak Cantonese or Mandarin?

Lessons are taught in English. Your coordinator replies by email or chat in the language you prefer, and the free consultation can be held in English, Chinese or Japanese.

03Fees and cancellation3

How much are lessons?

Fees are in HKD and listed on our fees page.

How do I pay?

(to be confirmed)

Can I cancel or pause lessons?

(to be confirmed) See the terms of service.

04Next school: tests and timing5

Can my child take UKiset in Hong Kong?

(to be confirmed) Check the official UKiset site (opens in a new tab) for current test centres.

When should we start preparing for a UK boarding school?

It can help to start a few years before entry, so that English and Maths are secure before test practice begins. Your coordinator works back from each school's registration deadline. See boarding school preparation.

How does Hong Kong's school year map to UK year groups?

Roughly, P6 corresponds to Year 7 (entry at 11+), S2 to Year 9 (entry at 13+) and S5 to Year 12 (entry at 16+). UK year groups are set by date of birth, so your coordinator checks your child's exact year group for each school. A full table is in our application timeline guide (繁體中文). (to be confirmed)

Do you help with entry to international schools in Hong Kong?

Yes. A tutor prepares the English, maths and reasoning that entry assessments look at, and practises the interview. Each school sets its own assessment. See international school entry.

Do you guarantee a place?

No. Schools decide admissions. We prepare your child and support the application.

05University applications3

Do you help with university applications?

Yes. For UK universities through UCAS, we help with timing, subject choices, the personal statement and interviews, and admissions tests where we have a tutor — alongside IB Diploma or A-Level lessons. See university applications.

When should we start planning for UCAS?

Many families start in the year before the application. Your coordinator works back from the UCAS deadlines and your child's school year. A timeline is in our UCAS timeline guide (繁體中文).

Will you write the personal statement or guarantee an offer?

No. The personal statement must be your child's own work; tutors give feedback on drafts. Universities decide admissions.

06Applications and guardianship3

What does applications support include?

For boarding schools abroad and international schools in Hong Kong: shortlisting, timelines, forms and statements written by your child with our feedback, interview preparation and the steps to enrolment. See school applications.

Do you receive fees from schools?

Some partner schools pay ELT a referral fee. We tell you which schools are partners, and it does not change the order in which we suggest schools.

Does ELT act as my child's guardian?

No. Many UK boarding schools ask for a guardian for overseas students. We give you a list of guardianship providers to choose from and tell you if we receive a referral fee from any of them.
