Chris read Latin and Ancient Greek at Oxford University before moving to Politics and Philosophy.
After working at an advertising agency in London, he retrained as a programmer and joined an American company in Nagoya, where he worked in technical translation and taught English. He lectured at Tokai Gakuen University, then earned a PGCE in Modern Languages (French and Japanese) from the University of Nottingham and an MPhil in Japanese Studies from Cardiff University. He returned to Japan as Head of Oral English at Tokai High School, where he taught until March 2023. With many years as an EIKEN examiner and rater, he teaches essay writing and editing, exam preparation and Business English.
